ROOK ROCKS

May 22 2011 4:42PM

This was a pitchers duel right from the start. Sweeney from the A's pitched five strong allowing the Grays to plate only three and then Joseph, JR came in and shut the door in impressive fashion striking out 6 of the 10 batters he faced.....But the story of the game was Mr. Eric "Rook" Meyer who came to the park to pitch and pitch he did!!! Rook throws the complete game shutout for the "W". With a great defence behind him, Rook and Catcher Andy Lewis where masterful today.... SS Kevin O'Leary made 7 assists, including one play where Kevin ranged back on the outfield grass behind second and threw out the runner at first.... Great game played by both clubs.....

Grays rally back again, Bennett leads the way

Aug 23 2010 3:42PM

In the second game, the Grays again battled back after falling behind, finally taking the 6-4 win in extra innings. The Pirates took a 3-0 lead with runs in the first, third and fourth innings. The Grays answered with a run in the top of the fifth, when Frank Nellenback singled, stole second and scored on a single by Karl Aghassi. The Grays tied the game 3-3 in the sixth on a combination of walks to Gary Pudva, Dan Hamilos and Joe Perino, and stolen bases by courtesy runners Dan Gomes and Pat Averill. However, the Pirates scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, sending the Grays into their last at-bat down one run. But the Grays responded. Nellenback singled, was sacrificed to second by Lewis and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman on a ball hit by O’Donnell. In the extra frame, Pudva walked and scored on a triple by Eric Bennett, who scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Averill.
Lewis closed it out on the hill with a 1-2-3 inning.
“The team really showed its character by coming back to win both of these games,” said Nickerson. “We fell behind early in both games but they kept on fighting. There’s no quit in these guys.”

Nickerson throws a complete game one hitter

Aug 23 2010 3:38PM

A pair of late-inning rallies in the rain Sunday helped the Grays sweep a doubleheader in Winchester against the Pirates.

Grays manager Scott “Ace” Nickerson threw a one-hitter in the first game, in which the Grays rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win 6-5. After the Grays opened the scoring in the second, when Frank Ottati singled in Andy Lewis, who also singled, the Pirates scored five runs in unlikely fashion. With two outs and no baserunners, a walk was followed by infield errors on consecutive plays. Another walk was followed by another error in the infield, a hit batter, an infield single and another hit batter before a popup to second base ended the inning.

Five runs on one hit, and no balls hit out of the infield.

“We always seem to have that one inning when things get out of hand a little bit,” Nickerson said, “but fortunately we were able to overcome that today.” Nickerson kept the Pirates off the scoreboard the rest of the way, and the Grays had a five-run inning of their own in the fifth. Kevin O’Leary singled, moved to second on a walk by Nickerson and scored on a single by Lewis. Tim O’Donnell walked to load the bases. Ottati singled in Nickerson. Scott Etkin hit a ball to the shortstop, who threw the ball away, allowing two runs to score. Otatti scored on an error by the third baseman on a ball hit by Dan Gomes.

But the story of the game was Nickerson’s pitching performance. Nickerson struck out four and allowed only two balls out of the infield, both fly outs to center field.

“I felt really good warming up today, my pitches were working and I was staying with the hard stuff,” Nickerson said. “I hardly threw the curve today, mostly fastballs, splits and the slurve. I give a lot of credit to (catcher) Andy (Lewis), who called a great game and was excellent defensively behind the plate.”

Grays play two

Aug 3 2010 1:37AM

The Weymouth Grays’ offense slept in Sunday, all but missing the first game of the team’s doubleheader in Wellesley against the Orioles, but was wide awake in the second game, when the team banged out 12 hits and scored 12 runs.

The Grays (5-11) scored only two runs in the first game, a 10-2 win for Wellesley (7-11). The Grays’ only runs came in the third inning. Pat Averill singled, stole second and scored on an error by the Orioles’ third baseman, who threw the ball away as Scott Nickerson beat out an infield single. Nickerson advanced to second on the play and scored on a single by Gary Pudva.

As for the rest of the offense, Kevin O’Leary doubled and walked, and Scott Etkin and Frank Nellenback each was 1-for-3 with a single.

But it wasn’t just the offense that hurt the Grays. The Grays committed three errors in the second inning, when the Orioles scored four runs. Three more errors and a balk in the fifth led to three more Orioles runs.

Pudva, the starting pitcher, gave up only one earned run before leaving the game with an injured oblique muscle in the fourth.

“We squandered a solid pitching performance by Pudva in the first game,” said Nickerson. “We gave up six unearned runs. That’s not like us.”

The second game was a different story.

The Grays matched their run total of the first game in the first inning of the second game on the way to a 12-9 win. Nickerson, Eric Bennett and Andy Lewis each singled. Eric Meyer walked to force in Nickerson, and Frank Ottati singled in Bennett.

The Orioles answered with two runs in the second, but the Grays came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. John Robles doubled and scored on a single by Dan Gomes. Gomes stole second and third and scored on a Nickerson bunt single. Nickerson scored on a double by Lewis.

The Grays added four runs in the third. Ottati led off with a home run to left field. Gomes struck out but reached base when the ball got away from the catcher. Nellenback singled, and Nickerson singled in Gomes. Bennett and Lewis both were hit by pitches, forcing in Nellenback. Meyer singled, scoring Nickerson.

Three more runs in the fourth gave the Grays a 12-2 lead. Karl Aghassi reached base on a dropped third strike. Robles singled. Both scored on a single by Gomes, who scored on a sac fly by Nickerson.

But then the Orioles started to come back. Bennett, who pitched the first four innings, gave way to Lewis, who pitched a clean fifth but gave up two runs in the sixth. Aghassi took the ball for the seventh inning but could not find a rhythm, giving up four runs before being relieved by Nickerson, who gave up one run before getting out of the inning.

“We had a good lead and that gave us the opportunity to get some pitchers who haven’t thrown in a while some work,” Nickerson said. “The score was a little closer than we would like, but the offense came through with a lot of runs.”

The Grays face the North Shore Black Sox (6-10) Saturday.
